Narendra Modi is Steering India Towards Great Power Status
The Indian prime minister and his party have kept India on track for economic growth. Achieving succession and consolidating power will be necessary to fulfill his ambitions for India.

Narendra Modi has been the Prime Minister of India since 2014, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose name translates to “Indian People’s Party.” As the BJP came first in India’s 2024 parliamentary election, Modi, who is currently 75 years old, will remain Prime Minister until 2029. India is a middle power that however has strong geopolitical fundamentals. Since 2023, it has been the world’s most populous country, with a population of over 1.4 billion people. While India’s economic growth is less impressive than that of East Asian economies, India still boasts one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, trending at around 7 percent growth annually.1 The country’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has stated India will be the world’s third-largest economy by 2027 with a GDP of roughly $5 trillion.2
