In January 2024, Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface (BCI) company Neuralink implanted its first device into a human recipient’s brain, allowing a 29-year-old man paralyzed below the shoulder, Noland Arbaugh, to control a computer cursor with his thoughts and, among other things, play computer games like online chess, Civilization, and even first-person shooters.1 Since then, at least twenty additional paralyzed recipients have received Neuralink implants, allowing them to control not just cursors but computer keyboards and even robotic arms.2 While Neuralink is the most prominent BCI company, it is far from alone. In March 2026, the Chinese government designated BCIs a technological priority for the country and also approved the world’s first commercially-available invasive BCI, made by Shanghai-based company Neuracle; other such devices remain approved only for clinical trials.3 In June 2026, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta released a study showing it could decode more than half of words typed by a subject using only noninvasive magnetic sensors.4 The further development of this technology promises not just transformative medical devices but also hands-free input to computers and new training data for AI—first steps on an envisioned path of merging human mind and body with machine.

Gas turbines are types of internal combustion engines that convert chemical energy from natural gas into mechanical rotation that a generator then converts into electricity. Gas is the world’s second-largest energy source for power generation, behind only coal: in 2025 gas power plants worldwide generated around 7000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, compared to around 10,500 TWh for coal plants.1 Such power plants are especially important in regions such as the United States where, due to the fracking revolution, natural gas remains cheap and abundant, and also in many European countries where regulatory factors have combined to drive coal and nuclear power plants out of operation. Similar U.S. regulations mean that the recent significant increase for U.S. electricity demand, which was close to stagnant for two decades, and is driven primarily by AI data center construction, will be met through burning natural gas, driving rapidly expanding demand for gas turbines.

Cerebras is a U.S. semiconductor company that, in 2019, made computing history by successfully creating the physically largest-ever computer chip.1 An Nvidia H100 chip, first released in 2022, is roughly 814 square millimeters large—small enough to sit on a fingertip. In comparison, Cerebras’ “Wafer-Scale Engines” are over 46,000 square millimeters in size, well over fifty times larger than Nvidia’s chips and large enough to be held with both hands. The idea behind building massive computer chips is very simple: electrical signals between transistors on a single large chip must move far less distance than signals moving across many smaller chips connected with external networking components, making a single chip not just faster and more powerful but also more economical, using less electricity. Cerebras used a novel design to circumvent existing semiconductor design and manufacturing constraints, and says its chips are twenty times faster than Nvidia’s chips at running AI models, allowing instantaneous responses with no wait-time for users; its chips have won a major customer in OpenAI, which agreed to buy $20 billion of Cerebras chips in April 2026.2

With a market capitalization of over $2 trillion (TSM), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the most valuable semiconductor manufacturing company in the world as of May 2026.1 The company is considered a chip “foundry” that does not design any computer chips but only manufactures them on contract for other companies, including “fabless” semiconductor companies like Nvidia and AMD. TSMC singlehandedly dominates global production of the world’s most advanced and computationally powerful computer chips and its dominance has not just held but grown in recent years: its share of global foundry revenue has grown from 59% in 2020 to 72% as of late 2025—with second-ranked Samsung dwarfed in comparison with a market share of just 7%—and its market share reaching even higher with greater chip sophistication.2 At present, the entire leading edge of artificial intelligence technology is dependent on TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities as well as its ability to scale up production quickly, and by extension so are the fortunes of many of the world’s most valuable companies including Nvidia and Apple.

TotalEnergies, until recently known as Total, is one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. The French corporation has a market capitalization of around $200 billion (TTE) as of May 2026, and generated $182 billion of revenue in 2025, making it the largest company in France by revenue.1 Since current CEO Patrick Pouyanné started his tenure in 2014, Total’s market capitalization has more than tripled, outperforming all of its “Big Oil” competitors, including ExxonMobil, Shell, and BP.2 Total has a little over 100,000 employees in over one hundred countries.3 In 2025, the company produced around 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day across both its oil and gas production operations, which means that Total operates at a scale comparable to some of the world’s largest oil and gas producing countries: Norway, for instance, produced around 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.4 Because of the disappearance of Russian pipeline gas from the European market due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and accompanying sanctions on Russia, Total has become a much more strategically important company for Europe.

With annual revenues of $261 billion and over 800,000 employees, Foxconn is one of the largest companies in the world by both revenue and headcount and the largest such company from Taiwan.1 Foxconn is a contract electronics manufacturer that produces billions of individual electronic devices and components annually, with production tallies as high as 5.8 billion items in 2021.2 Holding an estimated 30-40% of global market share for contract manufacturing of electronics, Foxconn produces everything from smartphones to computers to video game consoles for companies like Amazon, Huawei, Sony, Dell, and Apple—the latter of which has been its most important customer for over a decade thanks to the success of the iPhone.3 Since 2023, Foxconn has also become the main electronics manufacturing partner for Nvidia, turning Nvidia’s powerful chips into completed server products that fill the halls of data centers for artificial intelligence.

Rheinmetall is the largest and most valuable German defense conglomerate, with a market capitalization of nearly $80 billion (RHM.DE) as of May 2026.1 Although it has a recently-acquired shipbuilding arm and has expanded into large-scale ammunition production, it is primarily a designer and manufacturer of armored vehicles and related weapons systems, which are key to moving infantry around the battlefield. In 2024, Rheinmetall was the world’s twentieth-largest defense company by total arms sales revenues and the third largest dedicated defense company in Europe after French firm Thales and Italian manufacturer Leonardo.2 Due to rapidly increasing European defense spending since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rheinmetall’s revenues have risen by over 50% in the last five years, from over €6 billion in 2019 to almost €10 billion in 2025, driving its share price up over 1700% in the same time period and making it one of the best-performing stocks in Europe.3 The company’s CEO was reportedly targeted for assassination by the Russian security services for its assistance to Ukraine.4 The company has approximately 44,000 employees, of which approximately half are based in Germany.5

Masayoshi Son is the founder, chairman, and CEO of SoftBank, a Japanese conglomerate focused on investments in technology. With a market capitalization of around $190 billion (9984.T) as of April 2026, SoftBank is the third-largest publicly traded company in Japan after only Toyota and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial; Son, with a net worth of around $64 billion, is the second-wealthiest person in Japan.1 While SoftBank is a key player in Japan’s telecommunications and information technology sectors, Son’s ambitions are global. Unit 8200 is the unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responsible for signals intelligence. With an estimated 5000 active duty soldiers, it is the largest military intelligence unit in the IDF. It handles open-source intelligence, threat assessment, cryptanalysis, and cyberwarfare. In terms of technical expertise, Unit 8200 has been described by experts as on par with the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).1 Unit 8200 is believed to have played a key role in dramatic operations ranging from the Stuxnet virus that crippled Iran’s nuclear centrifuges in the 2000s to the September 2024 attacks on Hezbollah via compromised pagers and other communications devices rigged with explosives. Alumni of Unit 8200 have also played a key role in the Israeli software and startup sectors: they have founded hundreds of cybersecurity companies, including Check Point, Palo Alto Networks, CyberArk, Wiz, and the controversial NSO Group, as well as successful consumer tech startups like Viber and Waze. They are key to electronics when used for batteries, magnets, and luminescence, for example in the displays of smartphones and computers or in military sensors, as well as in the motors of electric vehicles. Rare earths are also commonly used as catalysts in automobiles and oil refining, and are used industrially to produce high-quality steel and glass. The term “rare earth element” is a misnomer: rare earths are generally more geologically abundant than many commonly used commodity metals like copper, tin, and lead. While rare earth deposits are mined much like any other mineral is mined, the bottleneck on rare earths is rather the concentration and purity of natural deposits and the need to refine mined minerals with energy-intensive processes. In 2025, China had an estimated 92.1% share of global rare earth refining capacity.1

The recent growth in optimism about artificial intelligence technology has led to a boom in demand for the computing power or “compute” that these new AI algorithms require for training i.e. development and inference i.e. usage. The high compute demands for AI are met through chips like Nvidia’s “graphics processing units” (GPUs), which are capable of processing vast amounts of computations in parallel. While GPUs and their equivalents from other companies like AMD or Google can be purchased and run on a company’s own premises in what is now commonly called a “data center” or “compute cluster,” the financial costs and organizational complexities of building such data centers, maintaining them, and inevitably upgrading them with new and more powerful chips are prohibitively high even apparently for well-funded frontier AI labs like OpenAI or Anthropic. As a result, many companies and individuals choose instead to rent compute from “cloud computing” providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure and, alongside these large and established companies, a number of smaller and newer “neocloud” companies have arisen to meet demand specifically for remotely renting out AI compute.

With annual profits of over $80 billion, Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) is the seventh-most profitable company in the world and the eighth-most valuable with a market capitalization of over $1.5 trillion (META).1 Meta earns these profits from just under $200 billion in annual online advertising revenues from its globally dominant social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As of December 2025, Meta claimed 3.58 billion daily active users across its social media platforms.2 This is roughly 45% of the entire human population. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made it a goal for the company to produce frontier artificial intelligence models at the cutting edge of capabilities, competitive with AI labs like OpenAI or Anthropic. With AI capabilities premised to a large extent on access to enough computing power or “compute” from advanced semiconductors from companies like Nvidia, Meta’s financial firepower makes it a key contender to examine in the AI race.

On February 28, 2026, the militaries of the United States and Israel jointly launched airstrikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran in an apparent surprise attack that resulted in the deaths of a number of top Iranian government and military leaders, including the defense minister, chief of the general staff of the armed forces, and commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Most notably, the strikes also killed the 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Shia Muslim cleric who served as Supreme Leader of Iran’s revolutionary and theocratic system of government from 1989 until his death. The U.S. and Israel have continued extensively bombing both military and civilian sites in Iran, with shifting public justifications ranging from regime change in Iran to more modest goals revolving around degrading Iran’s military capabilities or nuclear program.

Starlink is a satellite internet service provided by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. With just under 10,000 satellites in Earth orbit as of March 2026, Starlink is not just the largest and most advanced satellite internet constellation but, by volume, the single largest satellite operator on the planet: Starlink satellites account for roughly two-thirds of all active satellites in orbit of any kind.1 With the first Starlink launch occurring only in 2019, this feat has been achieved thanks to over 300 launches of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 reusable medium-lift rocket since then.2 SpaceX has greatly decreased the cost of launching mass to orbit, to the point of constituting nearly 90% of all mass launched to orbit worldwide in 2024, and has used this capability to rapidly build out Starlink.3 Starlink has, in turn, become SpaceX’s key source of revenue. In 2025, SpaceX reportedly generated $8 billion in profit on around $15 billion of revenue, with an estimated 69% of revenue coming from Starlink.4 Starlink is poised to be one of the key sources of cashflow to fund Musk’s lofty ambitions in space expansion and artificial intelligence.

Cohere is a Canadian artificial intelligence company founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst, and Ivan Zhang. ByteDance, best known as the creator of the popular short-form video app TikTok, is also one of China’s largest cloud computing providers, hosts ByteDance Seed—one of the country’s largest frontier AI research labs—and owns the AI assistant app Doubao. The Doubao app is their main consumer product and had over 170 million monthly active users in China as of October 2025, meaning they have the most active users in the country, ranking above DeepSeek’s app’s 145 million monthly active users.1 ByteDance has the advantage of being able to train its multimodal models on user-submitted videos from TikTok and its Chinese equivalent, Douyin. Douyin, however, is not just a social media platform but also the third largest e-commerce platform in China.2 ByteDance’s stated aim is to integrate AI agents into every facet of how people interact with the internet and offer an immersive consumer entertainment, e-commerce, and social media experience within their own “super-app” ecosystem, something the company’s founder Zhang Yiming, who de facto still leads the company, believes will fundamentally transform user retention and satisfaction.

Corporate investments in artificial intelligence, especially in the construction of a new generation of data centers built to provide computational power or “compute” for generative AI, have driven over one-third of the United States’ GDP growth in the first nine months of 2025.1 These new data centers will also substantially increase both peak and total electricity demand, after two decades in which power demand was nearly flat, and grew at well under a 1% compound annual growth rate.2 Today, the entire U.S. data center sector draws a total of less than 15 gigawatts (GW) of power, but the pipeline of new data centers under construction will, if all planned facilities right now are completed, add 140 GW of new load to the current total U.S. peak demand of 760 GW, an increase of almost 20%.3
